Beatriz Haddad Maia Facts

  1. Beatriz, at the youth tier, had reached a peak world ranking of number 15. The biggest achievement of her youth career was reaching the final of the doubles event in the French Open in both 2012 and 2013.
  2. She had first come into the spotlight in February 2015, when aged just 18 and ranked 234th in the world, she had reached the quarter-final stage of the Rio Open, as a wildcard. She even had 3 match points in the quarter-final match but had to eventually retire in the 3rd set due to an injury.
  3. She had also reached the semi-final stage in the doubles competition of that event but was forced to withdraw due to the injury sustained in the singles competition.
  4. At the 2017 Prague Open, she had upset Samantha Stosur who was then ranked 19th in the world. This was Beatriz’s first win over a player ranked within the ‘Top 20’ of the official WTA singles rankings. It was also the first such win for a Brazilian female player since 1987.
  5. At the 2017 Wimbledon Championships, her first direct acceptance in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, she had defeated Laura Robson in the first round. This was the first time that a Brazilian woman had won a Wimbledon main-draw match since 1989.
  6. At the 2017 Korean Open, she had become the first Brazilian to reach a non-clay-court final since 1983. The performance had helped her break into the ‘Top 60’ of the official WTA singles rankings for the first time in her career.
  7. Her win in the first round of the 2018 Australian Open was the first time that a Brazilian woman had won an Australian Open main-draw match in the Open Era. It was also the first time that a Brazilian woman had won an Australian Open main-draw match since Maria Esther Bueno had reached the final of the tournament in 1965.
  8. After retiring, due to an injury, in the first round of qualifying at the 2019 French Open, she had competed in a WTA Challenger event in Bol, Croatia. It was there that she had reportedly failed a urine test. In July 2019, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) issued her an immediate provisional suspension, pending determination of the charge against her at a full hearing, after a positive test for metabolites of 2 selective androgen receptor modulator substances.
  9. In February 2020, the ITF issued a verdict that the supplement she had ingested was contaminated. However, the verdict still defined a suspension for 10 months, including time already served. This meant that she was free to return to active competition on May 22, 2020. However, with her rank having dropped to 1342nd during the suspension, she was forced to start off by participating in much smaller tournaments than she was used to.
  10. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, her return was delayed until September 2020. She won 4 minor tournaments in Portugal within 2 months of her return but a hand injury that eventually led to an enchondroma diagnosis would force her to undergo season-ending surgery.
  11. In the doubles event of the 2022 Australian Open, she had become the first Brazilian woman to reach the semi-final of the Australian Open in the Open Era. When she reached the final of the tournament, she had become just the 3rd Brazilian woman to reach the final of a Grand Slam tournament. The performance had catapulted her to number 40 in the official WTA doubles rankings
  12. In May 2022, she had become the first Brazilian to break into the ‘Top 50’ of the official WTA singles ranking since 2015.
  13. After winning both the singles and the doubles titles at the Nottingham Open in June 2022, she had broken into the ‘Top 40’ of the singles rankings and the ‘Top 30’ of the doubles rankings.
  14. Exactly a week later, she had triumphed in the singles event of the Birmingham Classic. The title had propelled her into the ‘Top 30’ of the singles rankings for the first time in her career. She was also the first Brazilian to win the title in the tournament’s 40-year history.
  15. After winning 5 matches each, and the title, at both the Nottingham Open and the Birmingham Classic in June 2022, she had won her 2nd and 3rd round matches at the Eastbourne International. This had given her a winning streak of 12 matches.
  16. She received a walkover in her next match, the quarter-final. Beatriz’s winning streak was broken by Petra Kvitová in the semi-final of the tournament. The last player to have managed such a winning streak on grass courts was a certain Serena Williams.
